Messaging: How do I Analyze Top Words Within Communications?

See the words that appear most frequently in communications by using the Top Words tab.  It is located in the top navigation bar.

To begin using the Top Words tool, create a workbook, selecting the retailers, regions, channels, and dates you wish to analyze.

The Top Words chart will populate with the most commonly used words across the communications within your workbook in order of most to least common. You can see up to 100 of the most common words.

The bars indicate the frequency that word is mentioned across all communications in your workbook. Use the Show Numbers As button to select Counts to view the number of times a word has been used across your workbook or select Percentages to see what percentage of communication updates within your workbook contain each top word.

You can aggregate all the communication updates in your workbook into one Top Words chart, or use the Group By and Split On feature to customize your view. For example, you may want to Group By Channel and Split On Retailer to compare the most used words by competitors in each of their channels.

Once you have selected what you want to Group By, Split On will become available. Depending on which filters you have selected within your filter panel, you are able to compare communication strategies by:

  • Region
  • Retailer
  • Gender
  • Channel
  • Keywords
  • Date

Clicking on a bar in the chart will bring up a popover display of the relevant updates containing that particular word.

Click on an individual update to see the full view. The selected word is highlighted as to where it appears on the page.

Excluding Words

You can choose to exclude certain words or symbols from appearing within the Top Words chart.

  • Hover over the word you want to exclude from the chart and click on the X icon.

  • These words are then added to the Excluded Words drop-down list at the top of your workbook.
  • You can re-add these words to your Top Words chart by clicking the checkmark next to them.

You can also choose to include or exclude currency, percent symbols, and numbers by toggling the Show or Hide buttons under Symbols.

Exporting Top Words

The Top Words chart can be exported and emailed to you in Excel format.

  • Ensure your workbook is saved.
  • Click Export at the top of your chart controls.

  • Select whether you want to remove any empty charts.
  • Click Export.
