How Does EDITED Determine The Gender Of A Product?

There are potentially three different stages we go through to determine the gender of a product.

  • As a first step, we always look at all the data we’ve collected from the product page and scan it to see if gender is referenced anywhere, e.g. women’s tops. Usually, this is enough for us to determine the correct gender of a product.
  • If gender isn’t mentioned anywhere on the product page, we’ll next look at where we found that product on the retailer’s website. For example, if we found it through a landing page for a women’s specific category.
  • Lastly, we refer to some rules we’ve created around gender. For example, if the product is a dress, it would be categorized under women’s or girls.

There may be instances when a product's gender is incorrect. As a user, you may spot this ahead of our QA team. To assist you with this, you are able to click on the product card and amend the gender using the dropdown.
Amending curations to be correct supports our data quality and improves the algorithms we use by strengthening their knowledge. However, if you notice a lot of discrepancies or discrepancies across categories, please report the issue through the support button so we can diagnose the problem.
